Chapter Six
Ronan
That god-awful rain has finally passed, but it leaves muddy tracks everywhere I walk. I cannot go to the shed to get firewood without making a mess at the back door.
I glance over my shoulder. Tisa is curled up on the couch, nose buried in the new book I got for her a couple of days ago. I bought more than one at the pathetic grocery store that attempts to attract customers with a bookstand.
I want to use the time when her mind is filled with unrealistic plotlines to condition her body. And I am happy to see the results of her being comfortable in my home. She is not jumpy when I touch her suddenly. She has not even attempted to go for the door, and I do not think she has looked at any exit long enough to get the idea of escape.
After all, I am holding her books hostage.
It is a stupid reason to stay, but I do not give her enough credit to accurately figure out the situation.
She could scream until she loses her voice, and no one would hear her. The trees might answer her with a rustle or two, but that would only amplify the isolation of where we live.
I wonder if she despises her friend for getting her into this situation.
I quietly leave through the back door. The mud has dried out enough to not get caked under my shoes. The sun is intense, the wind has died, and the blue sky is not obstructed by white clouds.
The past few days of gloomy skies and pouring rain had left me itching with aggression, but the sunlight scorching my skin is just as aggravating.
I do not need a jacket for a simple trip, and it has warmed up considerably.
The rain had left behind a mess of broken tree branches, leaves littering the ground, and even unhooked the gate in the backyard.
I click my tongue in annoyance and shove the branches with my shoes. They are blocking the entrance to the shed, and I need to get back to Tisa before she misses me too much.
She has been a good girl, and I let her sleep on the bed with me. She also follows me a lot with those innocent eyes peering at the walls as if they are new to her.
It is a shame it took so little effort to break her, but the result is exactly what I wanted. She is mine, was mine before we met, and was mine way before she even knew that friend of hers.
Her so-called friend, Lena, had thrown her under the bus by saying she was in the car. She wanted to take the heat off herself, so she gave me Tisa. But what she did not know was that my goal was always Tisa.
Her friend was just an additional bag of trash I had to take out.
The shed groans when it opens; the rain has not seeped into the cracks, so the wood is fine. I need to cut more for storage later, though.
